Installation of Floating Docks

Project: Installation of Floating Docks at Undisclosed Location

Overview:

In September 2017 Smithbridge was awarded a project to install two individual concrete floating docks (approximately 90ft long x 11ft wide) moored parallel to wharves at an undisclosed location on Guam. The work also included an anchoring system, a flexible above water mooring system, and a removable gangway.

Smithbridge came up with an innovative method to anchor the concrete floating docks so they could rise and lower with the tide. The anchoring system was designed so the floating docks could be released in storm conditions quickly using a manual ‘quick disconnect’ system. The docks were arranged in a ‘L’ configuration.

Stainless steel cables hang five ton steel weights off the bottom of the harbor (same principle as when you go fishing and your sinker doesn’t touch the bottom but the line is tight). The stainless steel cable stays tight and the floating dock rises and lowers up and down the cable with the tide without knocking against the wharf.

Smithbridge fabricated the anchoring system, installed the anchoring system, assembled the floating docks, lifted the docks into the water and installed the complete system.

The installation phase of the project included a complex dual crane lift. With the floats weighing in at 100t each and the lift being undertaken in close proximity to the edge of the wharf, Smithbridge relied on our highly experienced lift engineers, crane operators, spotters and riggers to safely execute the lift.

Smithbridge was able to provide an opportunity for a young rigger to obtain Working at Heights, Confined Space, Fall Protection and a Rigging ticket through the project. He was subsequently deployed as a Rigger to one of Smithbridge’s offshore projects.
